SEDAA (Mongolia,Iran)

EXCLUSIVE CONCERT FOR BELGIUM

The music of Sedaa is a cross over between the traditional Mongolian music, oriental rythms and western jazz. Sometimes mystical, sometimes modern, even with a glimps towards gothic lovers. Sedaa means voice in Mongolian language. These are voices you are not ready to forget !

Because Sedaa offers a very particular and fascinating world of sound. The singer Nasaa Nasanjargal sings in the typical Mongolian style of throat singing et plays, just like Naraa Naranbaatar, the Morin Khuur, a bicord violin with a horse head. Also Ganzorig Davaakhuu, virtuoso on dulcimer, and Omid Bahadori, multi instrumentalist from Iran, play only traditional instruments.

Shortly, Sedaa represents a particular world of sounds, made by throat singing and unusual instruments, that give the impression of coming from a different planet. It is a scarce and precious experience to notice with such intensity that music is really that international language that no frontiers can stop !

Start: 8.30 pm

Advance 12 euro  Entry 15 euro

RUE DU CANAL (Ireland,France)

Formed in early 2013 Rue du Canal was created as a vehicle for performing the compositions of legendary French accordionist Serge Desaunay. Serge started off playing with La Chiffonnie a groundbreaking French folk group of the 70’s. After that he spent several years playing music with his brother Patrick. Après La Pluie (1979) and Le Beau Temps (1984), the two albums released by the brothers, are regarded today as milestones in French folkmusic. While mainly concentrating on Serges compositions, Rue du Canal also traverses the musical styles of musette and tango.

Rue du Canal also includes Ray Barron on mandolin/mandola, Kieran Fahy on fiddle and Gaspard Vanardois on guitar/oud.

Kieran originally from Tuam, County Galway has been living in Belgium since 1983. At present he tours regularly in France, Holland and Belgium with his band Shantalla. He has recorded on over 30 CD’s to date. Kieran also contributes some of his compositions to the mix.

Ray has been playing music for over 35 years. He has toured all over Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand. He is renowned for his dexterous and exciting mandolin playing. Ray has recorded four albums with his group Two Time Polka and continues to tour and play with the band on a regular basis.

Gaspard has played with Serge in their Eastern European styled gypsy band Taraf Borzo. His guitar playing drives the whole combination along with its gypsy swing type accompaniment. Gaspard also plays the Arabic oud which brings an exotic taste of the East to the band.

Rue du Canal are currently working on their first CD due for release in early 2014.

TEDDY DAN & THE IRIE VIBES BAND

With the recent release of Teddy Dan's latest album Outta Shasamane, we have a great third addition, completing the Teddy Dan Trilogy. Teddy Dan remains for me the Rasta Emissary, carrying the same message of African unity that we heard on his previous albums - his 1994 debut album, United States of Africa, followed by the 2006 release Kings Highway.

Teddy Dan was born in the late fifties in Trelawny, Jamaica, coming to England when he was thirteen and growing up in East Oxford on the Blackbird Leys estate. For the last ten years he has been resident in a part of Shasamane, a.k.a. Rasta Town, in southern Ethiopia. In 1948, following the defeat of Mussolini's Italian fascism in Ethiopia after its five-year dominance, Ras Tafari (Emperor Haile Selassie I), then leader of Ethiopia, put aside a portion of land, inviting those from the African diaspora to live there. This was a gesture of eternal gratitude for international support in the fight against fascism. Ten years ago, Teddy Dan accepted that invitation.

From its first offering, a ska vibration called East Bound, to the last track, a steppers entitled  Shashamane Rock, there is a stream of consciousness; a long poem of perseverance, in the search for African Solidarity. A 14-track paen to peace. Bright, uplifting; radiating Rastafari. Songs to spur you on and keep your head held high. A song of Africa - its natural beauty and human dignity. A collection of one drop brilliance. As well as the first track, my personal favourites are Jah Jah Know, Place in Africa, Jah is Watching, Jah Children Rise Up and Stand Up Right.

Like the great Little Roy, from the original roots reggae epoch, Teddy Dan is an underrated singer-songwriter of the contemporary scene. I hope this album goes somewhere to giving him the much wider respect that he truly deserves.

Start 8.30 pm      entry 7 euro. (no advance sales)

Saterday 2013 July 13

AGNOSTIC MOUNTAIN GOSPEL CHOIR

We have some big news, for a devoted few, anyway. Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir is re-uniting for European tour in July 2013. The line-up of Bob Keelaghan, Judd Palmer, Peter Balkwill, and Vladimir Sobolewski accepted an invitation to perform at the Colours of Ostrava festival in the Czech Republic. Given the calibre of the acts and size of the audience at Colors of Ostrava, the boys said, "Hell, yeah. Let's play that thang!" A number of European shows will lead up to the Colours of Ostrava gig.

This marks the first time in over three years that AMGC has performed together. Despite the band's lack of activity, CD sales and digital downloads are constant. New fan videos keep popping up on Youtube. All indicate that AMGC's underground impact is still being felt and is still spreading despite not being signed to a label other than their own.

KONGERO

With their voices moving together in tight harmony or intertwining in a whirling tempo, Kongero draws traditional Swedish music from out of the past and into the present. Kongero perform their music with dignity, warmth and humour.

In 2008 Kongero released their debut album “Om Mikaelidagen” ("On Michaelmas Day") and Kongero's second album “Bakvända världen” (“Topsy Turvy World”) was released in October 2011.

"We had these ladies to kick off our Sol European Forum in Stockholm, they really owned the crowd, beautiful!"

Paul Van Nobelen

"This group is a revelation. The beauty of the four voices is equaled only by the pristine, flawless arrangements. They provide a stunning example of a marriage between the traditional and the innovative. This magical Swedish music very much deserves to be heard far and wide."

KOMPANIA

REVIEW  f R O O T S  April 2013 KOMPANÍA Live!: Rebétika – Smyrneïka From Athens

How does the Maharaja song become the opening track on an album of Greek rembetika and Smyrna music? The fact is that in the ‘50s and ‘60s Greece’s popular music was very much influenced, inspired and captivated by Bollywood cinema and its soundtrack so it may actually be no wonder that Maharaja from the early ‘50s is on a rembetika album after all. But even with the Indian reference here, KOMPANÍA’s Rebétika – Smyrneïka From Athens brings me back to the koutouki atmosphere, an underground, cramped den with rembetika music, meze, retsina and great company.

This live album, however, is recorded in Belgium’s N9 Villa club and not in a Greek smoke-filled joint so maybe the reason the sound has this authentic Greek wisdom is because this same venue has hosted punk, jazz and a wide variety of anti-establishment music before. But back to the band – that’s what Kompanía means – and the characteristic depth of Katerina Tsiridou’s voice who, together with the two lead singers Dimitris Kranidas and Sotiris Papatragiannis and musicians Yiannis Kalafatelis and Nikos Protopapas, creates a truly vintage style rembetika album. Of course the reason the album has this quality not only in sound but in music as well is because all five musicians on board follow the same direction and they are simply brilliant at what they do. Their musicianship, harmony and synchronization are flawless and cool, as KOMPANÍA sticks to the traditional and original version of these songs. There are no surprises or modernizations here of these famous rembetika pieces which are composed and written by Toundas, Tsitsanis and Peristeris to mention a few.

This album is a lovely introduction to some of the best known rembetika songs like Garsóna about the best waitress in the world who waters down the wine to earn a few extra quid; Misirlou and Of Amán about drinking and thus getting drunk, and Hatzí Baxés with references to the sweet doll from Thessaloniki, the baglama and Tsitsanis himself. Another point of trivia is that Katerina Tsiridou plays the baglama, check her out on youtube clips!

THE PAUL McKENNA BAND

Still young but a new star among Scottish singer-songwriters: Paul McKenna. Since their first album “Between two worlds” in February 2009, the Paul McKenna Band collected nothing but excellent comments. At the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards in November that year, they won the title of Best Up and Coming Artist of 2009. Since then, they have performed in the US, Canada and all over Europe. This year, at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, the group won three nominations, for instance as Folk Band of the Year.  Without leaving their roots too far behind, their up-to-date interpretations of Scottish traditionals offer fresh and renewing arrangements. The Paul McKenna Band is enchanting, thanks to high quality vocals, guitars, violins, flutes, bodhrán and other percussions, based on their new album Slem the Tide.

BILLY & BLOOMFISH

Pascale Michiels is a flemish singer and theater player. She played parts in various television series. As a musician, she played with the belgo-chinese group Snowflower. She also toured Europe with the famous American singer Beverly Jo Scott.

Kathleen Vandenhout won a lot of prices in the television scene. She took the plane to Moscou with Pieter Jan Desmet and Steven Debruyn to become a Belgian Musical Ambassador. But she still is best known as a television personality on networks as VRT or VT4.

These two wonderful ladies met a few years ago, and decided to melt their voices in a perfect symbiosis of two great ladies sharing the same musical ideals. They bring a program with songs written by other singer/songwriters or by themselves. Just because they love to do so, because they love playing this music.

Marc O'Reilly

‘My friend Marx’ is the debut CD of the Irish singer/songwriter MARC O’REILLY, who did not only write and sang all 12 songs on the album, but also produced it and played guitars, bass and piano as well, so we have a very talented multi-instrumentalist here. Nevertheless, he got help from several other musicians and if we have to believe the press, Marc is going to be the next big thing to emerge from Ireland. Actually, after repeated spins of Marc’s first CD, I have to admit that this is very impressive high quality stuff. Marc is blessed with a great slightly raw voice and his songs are a pleasure to listen to. They combine elements of Classic British/Irish Traditional Folk and American/Nashville Folk/Blues, sounding very clean and melodic, yet with a raw edge here and there. Most of the 12 included songs are based around a rather virtuoso sounding acoustic guitar and Marc’s passionate crystal clear vocals, with as absolute highlight the beautiful and rather catchy “Narrow street”, although each and every song has it’s charm of course, because for instance a song like “Get back” is also quite remarkable, due to the rather interesting ‘dark sounding’ guitar riffs that are accompanied by a Trumpet. If you are a fan of let’s say JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW, BON IVER, RAY LAMONTAGNE, DAMIEN RICE, RYAN ADAMS and even FLEET FOXES, this musician is highly recommended to check out and let’s hope he will indeed breaks through in 2012!
